Complete Guide To Shabu Shabu Recipe

Shabu shabu is a Japanese hot pot dish very popular among not only Japanese but also among foreigners with its unique way of eating and great taste. This post will introduce the easiest shabu shabu recipe you can challenge at your home.

What is shabu shabu(しゃぶしゃぶ)...?

Shabu shabu is a popular kind of Japanese hot pot dish. The unique name came from the way you eat the ingredients by bathing them into the kelp based dashi soup. Its a kind of Japanese onomatopoeia.

The main Ingredient is thinly sliced meat, usually beef or pork, sometimes chicken as well. Not just only meat but you can also shabu shabu vegetables you like. You can't lack ponzu vinegar and sesame based sauce when you eat shabu shabu.

To mention a few rare kinds of shabu shabu, there is some shabu shabu dish we bathe fish slices instead of meat.

Ingredients (4servings)

-600grams of thinly sliced beef or pork
-1Chinese cabbage
-4leeks
-1block of tofu
-any kind of mushrooms you like
-kelp
-ponzu vinegar
-sesame sauce
-grated daikon radish(if you like)

Instructions

Step1: Pour in water into the pot with kelp and leave for more than 30minutes. Put on the fire and after the soup becomes boiled, kelp shall be taken out.

Step2: Leek and tofu, the ingredients which take time to get cooked would be better put into the pot first. After they are cooked, add all the ingredients left.

Step3: Really easy! Now you're ready to shabu shabu! Bathe the meat slices into the pot and enjoy with ponzu vinegar or sesame sauce.

Step4: After you're finished eating shabu shabu itself, you're now ready for zosui (Japanese risotto). Add some rice into the soup left in the pot and after boiling once, add melting egg. If you would like to, it would be nice to add some green leeks.

"Burishabu" is also a kind of shabu shabu mainly eaten in the winter season, when yellowtail gets fat. The ingredients are mostly same, except that you bathe yellowtail instead of meat slices. The half boiled texture of the fatty yellowtail is delicious. One of the must-try winter cuisines.
