Teishoku: The Japanese Style Meal Sets

What is Teishoku?

Teishoku can be directly translated to meal set. This term refers to the combination of white rice, miso soup, tsukemono, and your choice of main dish. In Japan, the word "Ichiju-Issai", which means a bowl of soup and one dish, is the origin of Japan's Teishoku culture. This has gradually evolved into the meal sets of today. Teishoku is healthy and cheap, so it is still a popular food culture in Japan.

The Typical Ingredients

Miso Soup

Miso soup is made by mixing miso (Japanese seasoning made by fermenting soybeans and salt), but there are akadashi (red miso soup) and shirodashi (white miso soup). Also, dashi is used, mainly fish broth and vegetable stock. Typical ingredients include, tofu, seaweed, and clams.

Broiled Fish

One of the most typical teishoku is the "Yakizakana Teishoku," which basically means broiled fish teishoku. A common fish used is salmon, and it is broiled in soy sauce.

Rice

For Japanese people, a meal is not complete without rice. It is an essential part of Japanese people's diet. Therefore, a teishoku is only complete with a bowl of rice.

Pickled Vegetables(tsukemono)

Picked vegetables are always present in a Teishoku, and it is mainly eaten with the rice. Typical vegetables used in tsukemono are cucumbers and radish.

This is a local Teishoku restaurant located in several areas in Tokyo called "Komachi Shokudo." This store is located in 8 different places within Tokyo, like Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and Okachimachi. There are over 60 different kinds of Japanese dishes that you can choose for your Teishoku. It is a self-serve style restaurant, but if you want your dish warm the staff will do it for you. And surprisingly, this store is open for 24 hours, so it you can enjoy eating Teishoku at any time!
