What is Oyakodon?

Oyakodon is one of the popular Japanese dishes! Oyakodon literally means "parent-and-child" bowl, because they use chicken and egg and cook them together. This might sound cruel, but it actually tastes really good. It usually includes sliced onions, which adds sweet flavor to savory oyakodon. All of these ingredients are simmered with a soup made from soy sauce and stock, which later is put on a bowl of rice.

This is one of the popular Japanese dishes, and there are restaurants where you can try authentic Oyakodon. So check the following places out!

Tamahide (玉ひで)

Established more than 250 years ago, this place is known to be the first restaurant that offered oyakodon in Japan. So of course the oyakodon they offer is authentic! Available at ¥1,500. Warning, their oyakodon is only available from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Check their website (link below) for their irregular holidays!

Hayashi (はやし)

Hayashi is located less than a minute away from Akasaka station.It is a famous restaurant for their Oyako-don, and only serves Okyao-don during the lunch time. They use their 40 year old traditional recipe to make the Oyako-don, which is a bowl made up of tender chicken the fluffy eggs on rice. IF you want to try this Oyako-don, make sure to visit this restaurant during the lunchtime on a weekday, as they do not serve this dish during the dinner time or on weekends.

Hayashi

2-14-1 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo

Toritsune Shizendo (鳥つね自然洞)

With its history of serving chicken cuisines for more than 100 years, this place is a really famous restaurant where they use good chicken from Japan. Their lunch time is very busy, so make sure to get there early! Their traditional oyakodon is available at ¥2,000 (regular size and ¥1,400 (small size). They also serve lunch-time limited special oyakodon at ¥1,600 for only 20 meals.
Around a 2 minute walk from Suehirocho station, no.2 exit.

5-5-2 Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo

Torijaya (鳥茶屋 別亭)

Just a 2 minute walk from Iidabashi station, hidden in a street with traditional atmosphere, this place offers exclusive cuisines from Kansai regions and udon cuisines. Their oyakodon uses selected chicken from Yamanashi and Iwate prefecture, which makes it even more special and popular. Their oyakodon (¥950) is only available during lunch time, so be careful!

Torifuji (鳥ふじ)

Just a 2 minute walk from Kayabacho-station, this place is well known for its oyakodon and chicken nabe (hot pot). Their oyakodon uses top notch eggs and chickens, and is available at ¥1,800.

Suegen (末げん)

Around a 3 minute walk from Shinbashi station and established in 1909, this place is a traditional restaurant that serves chicken cuisines. Their popular menu is their dinner course called "Wa", but the oyakodon that they serve during lunch time is also popular. You can try their oyakodon for ¥1,050.
