Cat Island

Aoshima Island, in Ehime prefecture, is one of the many cat islands around Japan. This nearly abandoned fishing village has seen an incredible rise in tourism lately since it became popular online. The cat to human ratio is about 6 to 1.
For cat lovers, this place is heaven. Can you imagine walking around a tiny island with your feline friends running around you freely?

How to get there?

To get to Aoshima you need to get off at JR Iyonagahama station and walk to Nagahama port. From there, you need to take a boat to Aoshima (there are two departures per day).

There is a boat departing from Nagahama port at 8:00 AM, and arrives at 8:35 AM.
The second boat is at 14:30, and arrives at 15:05.

To depart Aoshima island, you can take the 8:45 AM boat, or the 16:15 one.

A round trip ticket is 1,360 yen for adults (12 and older) and 680 yen for children.
A one-way ticket is 680 yen for adults and 340 yen for children.

Tips!

There aren't any restaurant or vending machines on the island so you will need to prepare some water bottles, a lunch, etc.

Rules to follow

There are some rules to follow while you visit the island.

1.Only feed the cats at the designated areas.
2.Do not loiter around the dock, in order not to interfere with the logistics of the port.
3.Do not enter private sectors or areas.
4.Please take your garbage back with you.
5.Do not overfeed the cats or they will get sick.

Finally...

If you're an animal lover and you just can't get enough of islands taken over by animals, you should also check out the Zao Fox Village in Miyagi Prefecture.
