Katsukichi is a restaurant established over 50 years ago which specializes in Tonkatsu. Tonkatsu is a popular Japanese dish where pork is coated with panko (bread crumbles) and deep fried.

They have 3 shops in Tokyo, Shibuya, Marunouchi, and Hibiya. This time, we went to the Shibuya shop, located in 2 minutes from Shibuya station, to try their summer specialty "cold katsudon".

Time to try "cold katsudon"

Katsudon is a rice bowl dish topped with slices of tonkatsu, usually served hot. But they created cold katsudon so people can enjoy tonkatsu in a hot summer.

Cold and flavorful soup

The soup is made from seafood broth and soy sauce. The saltiness and sweetness of the soup are well balanced, which goes well with the rice and pork. It has ice to keep the temperature cold.

The pork is very juicy and tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. The pork soaks up the liquid, which is also delicious.

You can enjoy eating with some toppings like grated yum, plum, shiso, and myoga (a Japanese vegetable) which adds a kick to the katsudon.

Cold katsudon was totally different from the regular hot katsudon. It was more refreshing than expected and you could eat it even when you don't have an appetite in a hot summer. It is a new way to enjoy tonkatsu!

Lastly

Katsuyoshi serves great tonkatsu dishes in every season, but if you come to Tokyo during summer, give it a try their "cold tonkatsu"!
