Yakitori ie Sumire やきとり家 すみれ

Torimitsu 鳥みつ

Granted this little back alley restaurant may be hard to find, but you won't regret getting there once you've tried the amazing yakitori! It's at a 4-minute walk from the Seibu Shinjuku Station. The quaint little yakitori restaurant really has a local feel to it. With only 12 seats it's quite popular with the locals and for any out-of-town visitors wanting to try so great grub! If you're unsure what to order just ask the chef to grill you up a few different things so you can try some local favorites. If you're feeling a little thirsty, pair your meal with some Japanese Sake or Shochu.

Torihana 鳥はな

Torihana is a small hole in the wall Yakitori jaunt with only 10 seats - all at the counter, making it that little bit more special! Another great place to mix with the locals and share a few beers or two over some perfectly charcoal grilled skewers.

Nishi Shinjuku Imaiya Honten 西新宿 今井屋本店

Imaiya provides a bit more of a "classier" yakitori experience and serves up premium home-grown grilled chicken. Though a little bit on the pricier side of things there is plenty more seating than other restaurants in town which helps if you can't get in somewhere else. These guys have a very wide selection of Japanese Sake if you feel like venturing out and tasting a few different types of Sake.

Michishirube 道しるべ

Michishirube is a very popular Yakitori restaurant in the Kabukicho area 5-10 minutes walk from Shinjuku station. Its very common to see people lining up outside the restaurant at night time to get a seat inside - a true indicator of how good this place is! It's reasonably priced and great selection of dishes to keep your appetite steaming ahead. Definitely worth a look!

Super popular with workers in the Shinjuku area and surrounds this Yakitori restaurant doesn't disappoint. Somehow within the bright-lighted and neon-signed district of Kabukicho this little place has kept its Showa-era charm. There's plenty of chargrilled skewers to choose from and prices are very very reasonable for downtown Tokyo!

Hajimeya はじめ屋

It is just a 1 minute walk from Seibu-Shinjuku Station and a 7 minute walk from Shinjuku Station. Opening hours are from 17:00 pm to 5:00 am (next morning). Their customers enjoy “nomikai” (drinking party, Japanese work culture) in there. Morning grind chicken tastes good and loved by the food bloggers.

Toritatsu 鳥辰

It is a 5 minute walk from the south exit and west exit of Shinjuku Station. This restaurant offers calm and adult atmosphere like a bar. It is really busy on Friday and payday in Japan (every 25th day of the month). Their yakitori is very popular for the male and female office workers in Shinjuku.

Tori Tamura 鳥田むら

It is a 5 minute walk from Shinjuku-sanchome Station. This very busy restaurant is very popular, so their customers often can’t enter without a reservation. Their tender yakitori attracts both the new and regular customers. “Torizosui (rice gruel with chicken)” is great as the last course of meal after enjoying your yakitori and alcohol.

It is a 6 minute walk from the east exit of Shinjuku Station.
They offer a quiet and relaxing atmosphere which is different from other old-fashioned yakitori restaurants. There are counter seating where you can watch their chefs at work and also sunken kotatsu seating. Their morning grind Oyama-chicken is genuine and tastes good. It is a great place for those who don't like noisy surrounding.

Lastly

The yakitori is often eaten with beer in Japan. These YAKITORI shops in this article are worth a visit when you are in Shinjuku.
