Strange Japan: Boob Ramen (Oppai Ramen) in Tokyo!

Sometimes when you think you know Japan, something like this comes along. Boob Ramen, or Oppai Ramen as it's known in Japanese, is the creation of the owner of Ramen Bar Snack Izakaya in Tokyo's Meguro ward. Read on if you dare...

Feel free to follow favy!

Taking Ramen to a whole other meaning!

Some would say it's more about the boob than about the ramen here, but I am told that the ramen is actually pretty good here, though I'm not so sure!
Most people know about ramen culture in Japan, however, a little-known area of Japanese nightlife is "snack" culture. A "snack" is essentially a little bar or izakaya usually run by one person, a woman. Her customers will usually call her "mama" and is an endearing term used by regulars.

It's also common to see a bottle of whisky or shochu bottles on the shelves of these places with peoples' names on them. As a regular, you can purchase a whole bottle and get the "mama" to save it on the shelf for you to drink on your next visit.
The "mama" at this place is named Takako. She runs it by herself and seems to be a popular personality in the area by the seemingly hoards of customers heading her way for the ramen... *cough* boobs *cough*
She supposedly puts on a bit of a show when creating the ramen for patrons' maximum enjoyment ;)
The ramen itself isn't what you would usually get at a regular ramen joint - and why would it! The light soy-sauce base soup is piled with noodles and plenty of green onions. There's the addition of a couple of condiments too, like yuzu pepper, lime, and fish oil.
The size of the dishes here are relatively small as it is a bar and mostly serve snacky type food. You come here to drink and enjoy the company of the owner.
Ramen Bar Snack Izakaya is located in Meguro just a few minutes walk from Gakugei-Daigaku station on the Tokyu-Toyoko Line. I used to live in the area but had never heard about this place until now.
One other popular thing here is the buffet that Takako puts on, though I'm sure this isn't the real reason people show up...

Ramen Bar is open from 7pm to 1am every night of the week.
I've been traveling and eating my way around the world! Now I'm in Tokyo to share all my favourite spots! I spend my time traveling, surfing, hiking, camping and eating amazing food! My favourite Japanese food...Agedashi Tofu!
