Takayo Kiyota: Maki Sushi Artist

Takayo Kiyota was originally an illustrator that worked for advertisements, magazines, and books. She turned to sushi art in 2005 when she realized that sushi-making was a sort of work of art in itself that was familiar to everyone but not really recognized as such.
She started making elaborate maki sushi rolls in the shape of anime characters, flowers, famous paintings, etc.
Tama-chan uses traditional ingredients to make her works. You'll find in her maki sushi raw fish, eggs, ginger and other vegetables partitioned by seaweed to outline the features of the characters.
She lines up the ingredients carefully in the sushi roll and once done, she never actually knows how the sushi pieces will turn out like until they are actually cut. The cutting part is the exciting part of her work, she says. It brings her "surprise and joy".
Once her work is done, the sushi is eaten! Dyes are used for adding color but everything is edible.
One of her famous work is a sushi replica of the painting The Scream. All the pictures in this article were taken from the artist's official Facebook page and Instagram profile. Check out the link below to access directly her FB page for more amazing pictures and information!
