Gunma is an onsen lover's dream come true! Gunma is famous in Japan for being a beautiful onsen region. You definitely need to stop by at least once! We suggest where to go, what to visit and where to stay.

Minakami Onsen

Minakami Onsen is located in Gunma Prefecture, which is one of the most popular destinations in Japan for hot springs. There are many indoor and outdoor baths in the area with breathtaking views of the local mountains and valleys.
There are many big hotel complexes surrounding Minakami Onsen since it is centrally located and has many sources of hot spring water.

Onsen Price

It is preferable to stay overnight if you want to enjoy the onsens in the regions as many of them are in "ryokans" (Japanese traditional inns). However, some ryokans offer entry to non-staying guests as well, and some public bath houses are open to everybody. The price varies between 500 to 1500 yen.

Access

-From Shinjuku, you can take the Chuo Line to Tokyo Station, or the Saikyo Line to Omiya Station. From there, you can take Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigoyuzawa station. You will need to walk two minutes to get to the Joetsu Line (Echigoyuzawa Station) until Minakami Station. It is a ten minute walk to Minakami Onsen.

-From Tokyo Station, you can take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigoyuzawa Station (please see instructions for Shinjuku above).

Attractions

The region is famous for its outdoor activities, such as whitewater rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, bungee jumping and snow sports. It is also famous for hiking since Mount Tanigawa is one of Japan's 100 most famous mountains!

The rooms are Japanese style and offer a unique experience. You'd better book in advance as this hotel is really popular since it has appeared in magazines and on TV many times! The rooms start at 20,000 yen.

Hoshi Onsen is 140-year-old national registered tangible cultural property. It is in a secluded area in Joshinetsu-Kogen National Park. There are gorgeous outdoor and indoor baths. The region is beautiful all-year round!

Minakami is a beautiful place to visit in Gunma. There are wonderful onsens with healing properties, lovely ryokans to stay at, as well as many activities in the area. If you're looking to have a wonderful and relaxing vacation, this is definitely the place to go.
