Takayama Matsuri, a Majestic Festival in Gifu - April 2019

Takayama Matsuri (高山祭り) is counted as one of the most beautiful festivals in Japan. Here's what to expect in the 2019 upcoming edition on April 14th and 15th!

Feel free to follow favy!

Takayama Matsuri (高山祭り)

Takayama Festival is said to have started between the late 16th century and 17th century and is comprised of two festivals: “Sannō Matsuri” in Spring and “Hachiman Matsuri” in Autumn.

Sannō Matsuri is held annually on April 14th and 15th. The southern part of Takayama town is the main spot where the festival is held and the mikoshi (festival floats) gather. The main shrine of the Spring Festival, Hie Shrine, is also known as Sanno-sama.

The Autumn Festival is held in the northern part of the Takayama town, where the Hachiman Shrine is located. And the festival is also known as Hachiman festival. This one is held on October 9th and 10th.

Both spring and autumn festivals have their own set of yatai (festival floats). During the festival, all of the floats will be placed around the historical town of Takayama. If you are interested in floats, you can visit the Matsuri no Mori festival museum to have a look at the exhibited floats.

Main events of Takayama Matsuri

Displayed Yatai (Festival Floats)

The gorgeous yatai floats are classified as an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Touching the floats is prohibited.

Karakuri Doll Show

Karakuri doll shows are performed by professional doll masters! The dolls move as if they are alive!

A show will be about 50 minutes long.

14th: 11:00 and 2:30
15th: 10:00 and 2:00

Evening festival

In the evening of the first day, on the 14th, Yomatsumi, an evening festival will be held. The contrast between the lamps and the night is surely beyond description!

Don't forget the gourmet foods when you visit Takayama!

Hida beef

Alongside the very famous Kobe beef, Hida beef is one of the top brands.

Kobe beef wrapped with magnolia leaves is a special cuisine you can only enjoy at Takayama. It's a bit expensive but surely worth a try!
Some food stalls along the main streets of Takayama town will sell Hida beef on skewers. Reasonably priced, and the taste will surprise you!
You can even have Hida beef sushi!! How amazing!

Takayama Ramen

Another regional specialty you can have for your lunch is Takayama ramen. The thick clear broth has a very deep taste. Although the Spring festival will be held in April, it's still cold in Takayama. Why don't you warm up by having some Takayama Ramen?
Quite sure I'm a Ramen freak. Almost up to 200ramens in 2017. Not only ramens but also love to eat around and drink around.
