Sushi In Niigata City

Niigata City is located by the Sea of Japan, so naturally, you'll find plenty of excellent sushi bars there. This is a list of excellent sushi places you should definitely go to while you are in Niigata. They are presented from cheapest to most expensive so there is something for every budget.

Kaitenzushi Benkei (廻転寿司弁慶)

This is a kaiten (converyor belt or sushi train) sushi restaurant you must try! People rave about because it serves sushi of excellent quality, made from local seafood and from local rice grown on the Sado island that is part of Niigata Prefecture. Sado is renowned for its exceptional environment and agricultural products. This is a large restaurant with counter seats and tatami seats. Expect to pay ¥2,000~¥2,999. Located at about 2 km from the Niigata Station.

Tomi Sushi (富寿し)

Tomi Sushi is a large restaurant which offers diners some of the finest, in-season ingredients as sushi toppings. Many of the items will be made from fresh catches from the Sea of Japan. Tomi Sushi participates in offering what is called the Niigata "Kiwami" (極み, zenith) sushi set which includes an assortment of sushis that are the specialty of the region. The items also change with each season so repeated visits throughout the year are recommended if you want to taste all the variety Niigata has to offer. Expect to pay ¥3,000~¥4,999. Tomi Sushi is conveniently located at a 2-minute walk from the Niigata Station.

Sushi Yasu (寿司安)

At Sushi Yasu, the sushi master recommends the Kiwami set (an assortment of Niigata seasonal specialties) for ¥3,000 which includes 10 nigiri sushis and a Japanese style rolled omelet called makitamago. The place is affordable yet very traditional. The chef makes sushi according to the "edo mae" style which is an authentic style that originates from Tokyo. It is a small restaurant with 8 counter seats and 1 table for 4. This place is highly recommended for excellent sushi at a reasonable price (¥3,000~¥4,999).

Minato Sushi (港すし)

Minato Sushi is a large restaurant on two floors. There are counter seats from which you can see the sushi chef at work but most of the seats are at tables, either traditional (low tables at which you sit on the floor) or Western. It has a fashionable and comfortable atmosphere and the quality is excellent. This is an overall great choice for a mid-range priced sushi restaurant. Expect to pay around ¥8,000 for a dinner and around ¥3,000 for lunch.

Sushi Nakahisa Hoshino

Sushi Nakahisa Hoshino is a high-end Michelin starred sushi bar, arguably the best in Niigata city. If you are a sushi connoisseur and willing to pay up to ¥15,000 for an outstanding dinner, then this place is really recommended. Ordering the "omakase" (leave the choices to the chef) is your best option here. This restaurant is located a 30-minute walk from the Niigata Station.
