Kagoshima has a tradition of ramen-making that dates back a long time. It's a wonderful place to discover some really delicious ramen made from famous local ingredients such as the black pork. This article presents 5 of the very best ramen joints in Kagoshima.

Tontoro (豚とろ)

Quite frankly the outer appearance of this restaurant is not really appealing but don't judge the book by its cover! Tontoro definitely serves one of Kagoshima's most amazing ramen. So rich and savoury, the pork broth ramen has toppings of cloud mushrooms, green onions, juicy chashu pork, a soft boiled egg, and dried fried garlic. The ingredients are simple yet harmonize so well together. People say to go there at your own risk because you might become addicted on your first try.

Kokinta (小金太)

This place is a locals' favourite. It has a cloudy white broth similar to the Hakata type of ramen. The soup is a mix of chicken, pork and seafood stock so you really get a savoury depth in the taste. The ramen is topped with plenty of veggies and some cloud mushrooms. Once you're done with the ramen you get to eat the store's signature pickled daikon radish for free. There is also some kimchi daikon at each table you can add to your soup.

Komurasaki (こむらさき 天文館店)

Komurasaki is a restaurant of long standing that has had a strong fan base for decades. The appearance looks a bit oily but actually, this ramen is on the light side. The dashi comes in good part from shiitake mushrooms and it is topped with plenty of cabbage. There is also some black pork as a topping, which is a local speciality of Kagoshima. The noodles are slightly hard, long and thin. This is an authentic type of Kagoshima ramen that you should definitely try.

Noodle Laboratory (ヌードル ラボラトリー 金斗雲)

The excellent noodles are homemade here, as you might have guessed by the name. You can choose from four types of ramen that are soy sauce based, miso based, spicy or light. They all have a deep savoury taste and the traditional toppings of chashu pork, bean sprouts, and a soft boiled egg. Their ramen bowls are on the cheap side too! They range in price from ¥630 to ¥730.

Nori Ichi (のり一 )

Simple is best seems to be this ramen joints moto. They serve great tasting ramen that comes with a boiled egg they serve first with the shell. So while you wait for your ramen, you're busy peeling the shell off your egg. This is said to be the best ramen for the price. It is only ¥500 for a standard bowl of ramen, yet you get a satisfying volume and they don't compromise with taste.
