Wakayama Castle is an impressive and beautiful castle which will definitely be on your to-do list while you are in the Kansai region. Here's some information on the castle and on the best places for lunch in the area. Japanese kaiseki, curry, ramen, or even French, here are the best spots to have lunch!

The Wakayama Castle is a 1585 construction ordered by the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Most of the castle was destroyed during the Second World War, however, the Okaguchi Gate and the stone walls are from the original construction. In fact, most of the current construction dates post WW2.

While visiting the castle, you can see some samurai weaponry and armoury from Japan's Edo Period.
The surrounding environment is also impressively beautiful and is also a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in the Spring.

It is most recommended to go in the morning, and eat lunch nearby so that you have enough time to tour around the rest of the city in the afternoon. However, you can also go towards the closing hour, and eat dinner nearby the closest station. Agura Honten 安愚楽 本店

Agura (the main restaurant) is located across from the Wakayama Castle! The ingredients are from the Wakayama region, and you can be sure the dishes are prepared with the uttermost care. There are 5 types of kaiseki courses to choose from, which vary between 5,000 yen and 20,000 yen. The ingredients change seasonally, so each time you go, you will be able to enjoy different types of sashimi, tempura, etc.
The rooms are Japanese style, but you can choose between sitting on the floor or at Western-style tables.

Joy Mimura JOY味村

Joy Mimura is an elegant French restaurant close to the castle. This restaurant serves delicious French cuisine for a steal! The lunch course is between ¥2,000-¥5,000 and all come with appetizers, bread, soup, a main dish, dessert and coffee. You'll be astonished by the finesse of the dishes!

Isola Bella イゾラベーラ

Isola Bella is a curry-specialized restaurant close to Wakayama Castle. It has a very modern interior, and there is also a terrace to sit outside to contemplate the view on sunny days. The beef curry is their signature dish and it is ¥1,300.

Ramen Marui ラーメンまるイ

Wakayama Ramen Marui is famous for its mountain of green onions over the ramen dish. Even those who are not fond of green onions love this dish! A classic meal here would be the green onion ramen bowl, a side of dumplings and a beer (hey! you're on vacation after all).
A bowl of ramen is between 750-850 yen. Enjoy!

Za Watami (Daiwa Roynet Hotel) 坐 和民

Za Watami is an affordable izakaya with branches all over Japan, but it is the only one with a view of the Wakayama castle. For lunch, you can have a sashimi plate, some sushi, some yakitori, etc. It's really tasty and the dishes are all very cheap!
