Must-Try Unagi (Eel) Restaurants In Fukuoka!

Unagi is the Japanese word for soft water eel. It is a type of delicacy that has been really popular for centuries, and the cuisine has stayed very authentic. For a quintessential Japanese dining experience, you have got to try unagi. You must try these restaurants in Fukuoka for a truly authentic dining experience!

Feel free to follow favy!

Ganso Motoyoshiya 本吉屋本店

Motoyoshiya is a 300-year old restaurant with a stunning authentic interior. Their specialty is the steamed unagi, but there are different ways to try the eel. The eel was cooked over charcoal and has a deep umami taste and the sweetness of the rice really makes each bite incredibly flavorful. You can have the set meal for 6,700 yen, or just the unagi bowl for 3,100 yen.

Wakamatsuya 若松屋

Wakamatsuya is an elegant traditional eel restaurant in Yanagawa. Since there is quite a queue during lunch hour, it is recommended to go after the lunch rush to enjoy a nice meal quietly. The eel has a charcoal taste which really complements the sweetness of the rice. Each bite is simply heavenly. The grilled eel over rice bowl is 2,610 and is worth every yen.

Yoshizuka Unagiya 吉塚うなぎ屋本店

The dishes are between ¥1,900 and ¥4,700, for different types of grilled eel on rice. This is another top-notch restaurant with a solid local following.

Tsurukame Sushi 鶴亀寿司

Tsukurame Sushi is also very popular with locals, in fact, most customers are locals and it isn't overcrowded. The sushi is excellent, yet reasonably priced! Although they don't specialize uniquely in unagi cuisine, their unagi sushi is incredibly delicious. Even people who are very particular about sushi rave about this restaurant. No matter what you order, you can't go wrong.

Inakaan 田舎庵

Inakaan is a long-established unagi restaurant with an old-school decor. It was featured in the Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand, which guarantees the restaurant is not only delicious, but a great value! A bowl of grilled unagi over rice is 5,500 yen, and courses start at 9,000 yen.
