Kabuki: An Ancient Performing Art That Lives On

Kabuki is a type of traditional Japanese theatre that depicts ancient folk tales in dance and musical plays. Kabuki performers wear sophisticated traditional kimonos, masks or elaborate makeup. Watching a kabuki play is a great way to experience the traditional culture of Japan. One of the best places to do so in Tokyo is at the Kabukiza 歌舞伎座 Theatre in Ginza.

Kabukiza is the most prestigious kabuki theatre in Tokyo. It has a capacity of nearly 2,000 people, which makes it one of the largest in Japan. It's stately traditional architecture really stands out in the modern urban city center of Ginza.

How To Get There

Located in Ginza, Chuo-ku, the theatre is very near the Higashi Ginza Station, or at a 10-minute walk from the JR Yurakucho Station.

Ticket Infomation

If you want to purchase a ticket for a full kabuki play (which lasts hours) at the Kabukiza, you can refer to the website below which has information in English about the upcoming plays in the major kabuki theatres of Japan. Ticket prices for a full play are generally as follows:

Box Seat : ¥20,000
First Class : ¥18,000
Second Class : ¥14,000
Upper Tier A : ¥6,000
Upper Tier B : ¥4,000

Cheaper, Shorter Alternatives: Single Act Tickets

You can purchase much cheaper tickets for single acts. These are called Hitomaku-mi (一幕見) and are purchased directly at the ticket counter of the theatre before the act. Priced at about ¥500 to ¥3,000, these are the best option for those with a simple curiosity about Kabuki or those who don't have enough time to watch a full play. Refer again to the link above to know exactly the schedule of each act.

Note that you can only pay in cash at the counter.

Time Schedule

Typically there is a Matinee and Evening Show.

The Matinee performances start at around 11:00 AM and last until 4:00 PM.
The Evening presentation starts about 30 minutes after the Matinee performance ends and lasts until about 9:00 PM.

Each performances are divided in two or three acts. Some can be as short as 20 mintute, while others can last up to 2 hours. The single act tickets' prices will depend largely on the length of the act. If for instance, you attend a 20-minute act, the price might be as low as ¥600.
