Tsurutontan Roppongi つるとんたん六本木店

Tsurutontan is a franchised restaurant with a couple of locations in Japan, mostly in large cities. There are six locations in Tokyo, and the most popular one is their huge restaurant in Roppongi. Every location has its own distinctive atmosphere.
Tsurutontan is essentially an izakaya (Japanese style tavern) where you can enjoy drinks and addictively good Japanese soul foods. The store specialty is udon noodles. You can get a wide variety of those, but there are also some other interesting options such as fresh seafood that you can grill directly at your table. Seafood is always a popular choice for Japanese people when they eat out at an izakaya.
And of course, it's a great place to have some Japanese sake! The izakaya atmosphere of Tsurutontan Roppongi adds to the sweet taste of the sake to make it an even better experience. There are about 200 seats in the restaurant that is a mix of a traditional and modern interior. You can sit at tables on the floor with cushions or at more western-style tables.

Foods and Drinks

Of course, if you go there you should order at least something with udon. They make their own special blend that is highly praised for their texture, taste and overall quality. You can have them cold or hot and the prices of the udon dishes vary from about ¥800 to ¥2,000.
The meat udon (¥1,100) is packed with beef that releases a natural umami in the soup. They also serve a sukiyaki style udon bowl that has some veggies and a broth with an even deeper savoury taste.
If you want a smooth and rich taste, the carbonara udon bowl is quite popular.
They also release some seasonal foods such as this summer one, which is a mix of udon and kakigori (shaved ice) topped with katsuobushi and citrus fruits. Udon served cold is a popular way to fight summer fatigue in Japan.
Udon noodles go extremely well with tempura. You can have a tempura udon set for ¥1,480.
Udon is awesome at Tsurutontan but so is the fish! If you aren't alone, it might be a good idea to order some sashimi platter or sushi to share along with the udon. The bowls are actually quite huge, so you can share one bowl of udon among two people and order some sushi and sashimi as a side order.
You can also order fresh seafood that you grill at your table. This is a must-try if you've never experienced it! It really adds to the izakaya experience.

Lastly...

You can even have shabu shabu at Tsurutontan in Roppongi if that is the thing that tickles your fancy. For great udon and an awesome izakaya ambience, Tsurutontan is definitely one of the best places to go in Roppongi.
