Kiraku 喜楽

When a restaurant has been around for more than 50 years in Tokyo, and that restaurant is still one of the most talked about in the city, and that amongst the tens of thousands of good other options Tokyo has to offer, it's fair to say that the restaurant has reached legendary status. This is exactly what Kiraku is. The shop of long standing is one of the most popular, not just among ramen fans, but people in general in Tokyo. There are literally thousands of overwhelmingly positive online reviews about the place. Here's what to expect and what you should order!
It takes about a 6-minute walk from the Hachiko exit of the Shibuya Station to get there.

Simply Awesome Chuka Ramen

Chuka ramen is a basic kind of shoyu (soy sauce) ramen. The secret of the great taste of this ramen is in its soup that has a strong taste of grilled onion. It's not too oily yet strong-flavoured. People say that the strong taste of onion gives them stamina. Noodles are on the thick side and have a slick texture. As for the chashu pork, it tastes light at first but is actually quite oily and the umami kicks in as an aftertaste. You can balance out that oiliness with some of that generous amount of moyashi (bean sprouts) you get in the soup. This bowl is just ¥700.

The Perfect Side Dish

People who've really worked up an appetite also order this signature dish: the chahan. It's a Chinese dish originally but the Japanese have made it their own. The fried rice is said to go so well with the soup of the ramen.
Gyozas are even more of a classic as a side dish to ramen. They have some really nice big puffy ones too.

Wonton Ramen

This menu item is about as popular as the Chuka Ramen. It is essentially the same but with some Chinese dumplings as an additional topping. They have minced meat and beans as a filling.

Summertime Option

The Hiyashichuka is a popular summer option. It is a soupless cold ramen with chashu pork, cucumbers, eggs, and moyashi as a topping. There is a savoury sauce that goes with it.

Lastly...

Have a cold Kirin beer with your order and you'll be in heaven. Kiraku in Shibuya, Tokyo, is a place that any self-respecting ramen fan should know about. It's such an institution that you should try it out, even if you aren't that big of a ramen enthusiast.
