The Best Places to Eat Ebi Fry (Deep Fried Shrimp) in Nagoya

Ebi fry or ebi furai, also known as fried shrimp is one of the famous Nagoya food in Japan. It is made of shrimps covered with breadcrumbs and deep fried. If you want to taste ebi fry, Nagoya is the place to go.

1. Kiharu Tei

Kiharu tei is a famous tonkatsu (deep fried pork) restaurant just a few minutes away from Tsurumai station. It is famous for its unique dish using ebi fry.
This dish is called "shachihoko don". Two huge ebi fries symbolizing the Japanese mythical creature shachihoko. It is tender and delicious.

2. Maruha Syokudou Chikamachi Lounge

This place Maruha Shokudou is a popular seafood restaurant. It serves a variety of shrimp dishes such as shrimp sashimi and boiled shrimp sushi, but it is famous for big ebi fries.
Its most popular dish is ebi fry teishoku which is ¥1460 and comes with two giant ebi fries. Its thin and crispy coating goes well with the fresh shrimp.

3. Hyoutanya

This restaurant has been selling ebi fries since 1950. You can enjoy a normal type ebi fry that is over 30cm long.
This restaurant has a unique dish called waraji fry (picture above). Waraji is a Japanese old sandal made of straws. This is called waraji fry because it looks like a sandal. It is made of two huge shrimps deep-fried to make one big ebi fry. It is juicy and worth a try.

4. Suzuya

This is also a tonkatsu restaurant, but it is famous for ebi fry and shrimp sashimi. Its shrimps are big and fresh.
Its famous dish is ebi fry. The unique part about this ebi fry is that it is served with the shrimp head attached to ebi fry and you must eat it with the head. The crispy part of the fried shrimp head and tender shrimp meat are delicious.
