Where to Eat The Best Taiyaki in Kyoto


Do you know taiyaki? It is a traditional Japanese sweet made of waffle batter commonly filled with sweet azuki bean paste, but there are other fillings too. If you want to try this delicious food, Kyoto is the place to go.

1. Nihonichi Taiyaki

This shop is in Fukuchiyama, Kyoto. Nihonichi means "number one in Japan", and its taiyaki is delicious enough to call itself number one.
The outside of taiyaki is made as thin as it could, so it is extra crispy. The inside is filled with azuki bean paste, so it is soft. The combination of crispy and soft is delicious.

2. Shiawaseno Ougontaiyaki

This shop is originally from Kobe, Hyogo, but the shop came to Kyoto too. It is famous for the inside filling. It uses Kobe's special sweet potato instead of azuki beans.
The sweet potato filling is sweet and matches the outside layer well. The shop recommends three ways to eat this taiyaki. You can heat it up as a normal way to eat it, you can cool it down and eat it, or you can freeze it to eat it like an ice cream. Any way taiyaki is delicious.

3. Asakusaya

This place is also in Fukuchiyama, Kyoto. This place has a variety of taiyaki including soft serve taiyaki, sweet potato paste taiyaki, etc. There is usually a line to eat this shop's taiyaki, so you should go there early if you want to eat it.
The look of taiyaki stubbed onto a soft serve is unique. The flavor of vanilla goes well with azuki bean paste!

4. Fukuhachi

This place is in Kyoto city. Its taiyaki is traditionally made with crispy outside layer and sweet chunky azuki bean paste. It also has many kinds of taiyaki other than the standard one.
For the summer, there is a white taiyaki. The outside is made of cassava plants flour, the ingredients of tapioca balls. It is really soft and springy. This taiyaki is a unique one you should try.
