Kokura Castle And Its Japanese Garden

Fukuoka

Kokura Castle is a must-visit spot if you are going to Kitakyushu. The castle has a beautiful Japanese garden too that you can access for a small price.

Kokura Castle 小倉城

Kokura Castle, called Kokurajo in Japanese, is a castle of the Edo Era located in the city of Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture. The castle was originally completed in 1609 but was then destroyed in 1866 and subsequently rebuilt in 1959. It is one of the main attractions of the city.

There are other Edo Era-style structures on the castle's ground. The moat and the stone walls are also some interesting features of the site.

You can't leave the site without seeing the Shinto shrine. There is a path with torii gates behind the castle that leads to it.

Kokura Castle's Japanese Garden

The five-story castle is surrounded by a green area you can take a stroll in. There is even a part with a traditional Japanese garden you can go to for a small admission price (¥300 for adults, ¥150 for middle and high school children, ¥100 for elementary school children).

Where To Eat Around The Castle

The south side of the Kokura Station is a gourmet spot, so we recommend you cross the river and head towards that station if you want a good meal near the castle.

Fujishima (ふじしま) - For Amazing Tempura

What we most recommend in the area is this restaurant called Fujishima which serves tempura set meals for around ¥1,000 or less. It's an unpretentious resto that is a locals' favourite. If you don't choose a set, you can customize your tempura items. For instance, a giant shrimp is ¥120 and various veggies are ¥80.
