Maebashi is the capital of Gunma Prefecture, located on the western part of the Kanto Region. If you are looking for some essential things to do in Maebashi, this area guide is for you.

Observatory Of The Prefectural Office

Maebashi is the prefectural capital of Gunma, and as such, is home to the prefectural government's office. This building is one of the tallest in the area, so from the observatory hall on the 32nd floor, you get an amazing view of the surroundings. You can see the Tone River and mountains as a backdrop.

Gunma Flower Park

You can visit the place any time of year and different flowers will be in bloom. There is a Japanese garden section and an English garden section among others. May, which is the rose-blooming season, is a good time to go.

Hot Springs

Gunma, in general, is known as a good onsen (hot springs) region. There are some natural onsen even in the heart of Maebashi for you to enjoy. The reason why hot springs are so plentiful is that Gunma is at the end of the Kanto plain and is geologically pressured by the mountain range to the west.

Try A Local Specialty: Yakimanju


Yakimanju is one of the emblematic traditional foods of the region. It is a rice yeast bun made with flour that is grilled over charcoal and seasoned with a sweet dark-brown miso paste. It is eaten as a traditional dessert. At Harashimaya, one skewer of yakimanju is just ¥200. The shop is in a beautiful traditional building. What will strike you the moment you walk in is the fragrance of the yakimanju being grilled.

Akagi Shrine 赤城神社

Akagi Shrine is a small shrine on a lake of Mount Akagi, which is on the outskirts of the city of Maebashi. If you want to spend some time in a peaceful oasis with scenic surroundings, this place is highly recommendable.
From downtown Maebashi, it takes about 50 minutes by car to get there.
