Feel free to follow favy!

Hakata Mangetsu 博多満月

Hakata Mangetsu is a popular Izakaya chain that is expanding mainly throughout Tokyo. "Hakata" is essentially another name given to Fukuoka City on the southern main island of Kyushu. Hakata is well-known for its delicious food culture, so the idea behind this chain was to bring some of the best regional cuisine of Hakata to the rest of Japan.
You can find many branches in and around Tokyo now, including in Akihabara, Asakusa, Ikebukuro, Shibuya, Ebisu, Takadanobaba, Shinjuku, Nakano, and Koenji. The claim to fame of the restaurant is there ¥199 beer and their yakitori skewers that start at ¥46. So if you want to drink and eat a lot without being too hard on your wallet, this is a pretty good place to go.

What You Should Get

The mostu nabe (¥880) is definitely one of their most popular food items. It is a miso hot pot made with offal and vegetables. Offals seem pretty oily but they are actually low in calories and have lots of collagen, so many people in Japan consider this vegetable-packed dish to be quite healthy. Granted that the chewiness of the offals might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's super savory miso flavor goes well with beer or traditional alcohols, so why not at least get one to share if you go in a group.

Mostunabe is a quintessential Hakata dish. It only got to be known in Tokyo from the mid-1990s.
Another must-have Hakata specialty item is the yakitori (grilled chicken on skewers). The "momo" (thigh part) and "negi" (leek) yakitori skewers are unbelievably cheap at just ¥46. Others are about ¥100 to ¥140 (which is still really cheap for yakitori!). You can have assortment plates as well if you're unsure what to have and would like to try all sorts of yakitori skewers.
This spicy tofu is surprisingly popular. A lot of people are saying on online review sites that it goes really well with the beer.
As for the ¥199 beer, it's not just any beer, but the Sapporo Black Label! Served in an ice-cold glass, what more can you ask for?

Is There A Catch?

Not really, unless you count the ¥330 "otoshi" (a kind of seat charge that comes with a small appetizer) as a catch. Otoshi are pretty common in Japan at izakayas and bars.

Not only is there NOT a catch, but it can even get cheaper when they have campaigns. During August of 2018, for instance, they had a campaign during which happy hour drinks where just ¥100! They often offer certain items at a discount price, so be on the lookout for that. Hakata Mangetsu is definitely worth the go for a cheap night out.
Japanese food culture enthusiast. Love to explore new areas and discover local specialties.
