What is Tonkatsu? (Different from Tonkotsu)

What is "Tonkatsu"? You've probably heard of this dish, which is easily confused with "Tonkotsu". Here's an explanation as to what it is and where to enjoy it in Tokyo!

What is Tonkatsu? (とんかつ・トンカツ ・ 豚カツ)

Tonkatsu
Tonkatsu is basically deep-fried breaded pork, which is often served with a thick sauce, cabbage and rice.
Tonkatsu is a combination of two words; the first being "ton" (豚), which means pork and the second one is "katsu", which is short for "katsuretsu" (カツレツ). The latter comes the French word côtelette, which means meat chop or cutlet.

This dish is versatile and can be served in a few different ways, such as tonkatsu curry, which is Japanese curry with a side of tonkatsu or tonkatsu sandwich, which is served between two slices of crustless white bread.

What is Tonkotsu?

Tonkotsu
Tonkatsu and Tonkotsu are two very similar sounding words but are two very different dishes. So what is "tonkotsu"? It is a type of ramen originally from Kyushu.

Tonkotsu (豚骨) comes from two words, "ton" (豚) which also means pork and "kotsu"(骨) which means bones.

This type of ramen is made from simmering pork bones for a rather long period of time, this gives the broth that deep taste.
