Beautiful Autumn In Nara: 5 Places You Have To See

Nara City

Nara, with its deer and vast park areas, has a lot to offer to its visitors, especially in the fall when the autumn colours appear! Here are 5 places that you must see if you go to Nara in the fall.

Feel free to follow favy!

Nara Park (奈良公園)

Nara Park is a huge public park that is home to about 1,200 deer that you'll have no problem spotting. It is such a majestic place that it was designated a place of scenic beauty by the government of Japan. Within the park, there are many shrines and gardens that you can visit, either for free or for a small admission fee.

Tamukeyama Hachiman Shrine

The Tamukeyama Hachiman Shrine is a well-kept secret that is particularly beautiful during the fall. It has on its ground an outstandingly beautiful gingko tree. The Shinto shrine itself was is established in the 8th century.

Todaiji (東大寺) and its suroundings

Todaiji temple has to be on your list of things to see in Nara regardless of the season. It is a huge Buddhist temple housing the largest bronze statue of Buddha in the world. In the fall, its surroundings that turn into various hues of red and yellow make it even more beautiful.

Horyu Temple (法隆寺)

The pagoda of Horyu Temple is also recognized as a national treasure because it is believed to be the oldest wooden structure in the world. In the fall, the area around it has many blooming flowers, and within its grounds, you can see some trees with some beautiful autumn foliage.

Wakakusayama (若草山)

Wakakusayama is a small mountain with a grassy flank right next to Nara Park. For a small fee, you can go climb this mountain from spring to the fall. The fall is the best time of year to climb it because the grass that covers it turns yellow. The mountain is very famous for being burnt during the Wakakusa Yamayaki event that occurs every year in January. From atop the tree-less flank, you can enjoy quite possibly the best view of Nara!
