Sapporo

Hokkaido is known as one of the best places in Japan to see the autumn foliage. If you are in Sapporo in early October, here are 5 places you have to see!

No matter the season, you should visit this iconic park in Sapporo. Odori Park is at the very center of the city, and with its lines of trees stretching 1.5 km, it really gives you a feel of the fall season. Make sure to try a delicious grilled corn on the cob sold at one of the many stalls along this linear park.

Mount Moiwa

This mountain is such a beautiful spot located right next to Sapporo, so you can visit the city and still get a good dose of nature without leaving it. Its ropeway is particularly amazing because of the breathtaking view you get of the city and trees. In autumn, the place is a must-go spot in Sapporo because of the beauty of the autumn foliage.

To get to the ropeway, from Susukino Station, take the streetcar line to the Ropeway Iriguchi Station.

Nakajima Park

Nakajima Park is one of the most beautiful parks in the city for its mix of trees, ponds, and historic buildings. What's more, it is conveniently located near the central station of Susukino. One of the highlights of the park is its traditional Japanese garden.

Former Hokkaido Government Office

The grounds of the Former Hokkaido Government Office are particularly beautiful in autumn. The building was built in the late 1800s so it has quite a unique architecture for Sapporo. You can see the baroque influences that came from the US. The people of Sapporo often call it "Akarenga" which means red bricks. Bricks are not a common construction material in Japan, so that is also a particular feature of the building.

This place is near the Sapporo Station and is free of charge.

Hokkaido University Ginkgo Avenue

On the campus of the University of Hokkaido, between the Department of Dentistry and the Pharmaceutical Department, there is a beautiful 400 m long line of Gingko trees. The best time to visit this place is from the end of September to the beginning of October.

The Ginkgo Avenue is located at a short walking distance from the Kitajunijo Station.
