5 Sublime, Affordable Sukiyaki Restaurants In Kyoto

Kyoto City

Kyoto is known for its sukiyaki that is made sweeter than in the rest of Japan. You should have this local specialty when in Tokyo. Here are some of the best addresses!

Feel free to follow favy!

Sukiyaki Kimura すき焼き キムラ

Kimura is an iconic sukiyaki restaurant in Kyoto that has been around since 1928. Reasonably priced, reliably delicious, and with a nice atmosphere that is both unpretentious yet traditional, Kimura is the go-to sukiyaki restaurants for locals and tourists alike. You dine at a Japanese-style low table. A sukiyaki meal is about ¥3,000 to ¥4,000.

The place is big with 250 places. You can ask for a private room if you are in groups of 6 or more people.

Very centrally located near the Kawaramachi Station.

Moritaya モリタ屋

Next place I would recommend is Moritaya, very conveniently located in the JR Kyoto Isetan Building which is directly connected to the Kyoto Station. Moritaya is not exclusively a sukiyaki restaurant but their sukiyaki courses are among the most popular choices. The most affordable ones are around ¥3,000 whereas the deluxe courses can reach up to ¥10,000.

Aside from the great sukiyaki, another reason to go there is the stunning view of Kyoto you get from this 11th-floor restaurant.

Mishima Tei 三嶋亭

Mishima Tei has been established in Kyoto since 1873! This fixture in the Kyoto restaurant industry serves excellent sukiyaki at a very reasonable price. I recommend the lunch special which is only around ¥2,500, but if you're looking for something more high-end, there are options for that too.

This restaurant is on the 7th floor of the Takashimaya department store near the Kawaramachi Station.

Chiso Inaseya 馳走いなせや

Chiso Inaseya is as quaint as it can get. If you want a lovely experience in an authentic Kyoto atmosphere, this is the real deal. The food is quite interesting as well. They not only serve beef sukiyaki, but also a kind of chicken sukiyaki which is quite rare. Alternatively, you can have kaiseki cuisine (course meal of many small, beautifully presented plates).

Located between the Karasuma Oike Station and the Kyoto Shiyakusho Mae Station.

Chiriri is a really beautiful restaurant that looks from the outside like a traditional Japanese mansion. Both their shabu shabu and sukiyaki are really good because of their secret tsuyu sauce used in the broth. Prices vary greatly depending on the course. There are some really good lunch specials from about ¥2,500.

Chiriri is near the Marutamachi Station.
