Feel free to follow favy!

At Zuicho, they only serve katsudon. Prepare for a line-up, it's just that popular!

About a 15-minute walk from Shibuya Station, this restaurant is a little hard to spot since it's in the back of a building.
Zuichou is a tiny restaurant with only 8 counter seats.
It is open on weekdays from 11:30 AM to 6 PM. Since the opening hours are quite short, you can always see a long line-up with customers coming in and out all the time.

Zuichou also only serves katsudon.
You can order different portions of rice, from small, regular to large.

The katsudon is served with a lid on top, it really raises your expectations

This is the katsudon with a small rice portion, ¥1,000.
Since the dish is served with a cover, it gets you really excited as to what's underneath.

The dish comes with Japanese soup made with daikon and pickled vegetables.

At Zuicho, the Katsu is served over rice and it's huuuge!

Normally, katsudon is deep fried pork cooked inside the omelette so both the ingredients are mixed together. However, at Zuicho, the katsu (deep fried pork) is served over rice so you can really taste both flavours and textures separately. The egg is soft and fluffy and the katsu is crispy.

The dish is prepared as soon as you order it, which ensures the crispiness of the pork and the fluffiness of the eggs.

The pork is delicious crispy which makes the dish so addictive

At Zuicho, the pork used has a low-fat content. Before frying it, the pork is pounded down to a smaller size.

When you try it, the pork is beautifully crispy. In my case, it was the first time to have something so perfectly well fried which actually makes a crunch sound once you bite into it. The meat is also umami-filled and delicious.
The egg is thinly cooked and closely resembles a crepe. The sweetness of the "tare" (sauce) perfectly complements the rice and pork.

There's also sauce underneath the rice. You won't get sick of this dish!

The home-made sweet and spicy sauce is poured over the katsu and underneath the rice.

Even once you finish the pork and you have rice leftover, you still have plenty of sauce in the rice and you'll finish it to the last grain. It's just that good!

A comforting hot broth

The katsudon is served with a hot Japanese broth served with wheat-gluten bread.
The taste is comforting and delicious on its own, but it is especially so since the dish is a little on the heavy side and it helps to cancel out the oiliness.
The katsudon at Zuicho is a unique dish and is really amazing. The pork is perfectly crunchy and before you know it, you'll be craving it again!
