Looking for a retreat from the bustle of the Tokyo Metropolis that isn't too far from the downtown area of the city? If so Takaosan (Mount Takao) is the ideal place to go. You can get there by public transit in about an hour or so from the downtown area.

If you leave from the Shinjuku Station for instance, take the Keio Line's express train up to the Takaosanguchi Station. It takes 48 minutes to reach that station on the western end of the Tokyo prefecture.
Takaosanguchi is a charming rural-like station where you'll find plenty of street food a small but lively shopping street. Walk up that main street a few minutes and you will get to the base of Mount Takao. From there, you will see maps showing the various trails of the mountain.

For the duration of the month, there are special events too as part of the "Takaosan Momiji Matsuri" (高尾山紅葉祭り) or Maple Festival.

You can always take the cable car from the Kiyotaki Station to the top at a small cost as an alternative to climbing the mountain.
The paths are very well kept and are paved up to the summit where you'll find shrines restaurants and a beautiful lookout where you can see Mount Fuji on a clear day!
Mount Takao is worth the visit any time of year but is particularly beautiful in November! Aside from the view, Takao san is also known as a gourmet spot. There is a regional specialty called tororo made from mountain yam that you should definitely try. Here are some good restaurants on an around Mount Takao.
