Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki: What It Is

Unlike the Osaka style okonomiyaki, the ingredients of the Hiroshima style okonomiyaki are not all mixed together; they are layered. Also, the Hiroshima style always includes noodles (either yakisoba or udon) and a fried egg. Unlike the Osaka style where the customers make the okonomiyaki themselves, restaurants serving the Hiroshima style okonomiyaki are made by the chefs and served to you on a plate.

Hiroshima Okonomiyaki Okotaro

Okotaro is located near the Kameari Station. Their okonomiyaki is made with a generous amount of noodles that are cooked until they are a little crispy. The ingredients used are of great quality - you'll taste the natural sweetness of the cabbage. Also, try the yakisoba at this place!


Located near the Iidabashi Station, this is a well-known Hiroshima restaurant looks like a traditional Japanese house. You have to take off your shoes at the entrance. There are counter seats, western style tables and Japanese style low tables.

It serves cheap lunch specials for less than ¥1,000 and is a popular place to visit at night too for people looking for a tavern-like atmosphere. The okonomiyaki are made with a generous amount of sauce so the taste is more on the strong side. They have an excellent side menu too.


Sonia is another go-to place for Hiroshima style okonomiyaki in Tokyo. It is located near the Shiodome Station and the Shinbashi Station. People say that the noodles at Sonia are particularly good and that the sauce is on the sweet side.


Look around this restaurant and you'll see students everywhere because it is located in Takadanobaba, a district with many universities and colleges. Kurahashi serves excellent okonomiyaki, but also some good teppanyaki beef. The sauce is supposed to be excellent and is said to match very well with the cabbage.


Kyodo is a bit outside the downtown core of Tokyo, but it is well worth the visit if you live in Setagaya Ward. It is located near the Kyodo Station. Their okonomi is said to be made with noodles that are al-dente and with ingredients that are more crisp than average. The sauce is really good too because of its deep umami.
