Tenhide is located a 7-minute walk from the West Exit of the Shinjuku Station. It has a lunchtime special tendon set that includes miso soup and a small dessert. The tempura is made up of 4 types of vegetables, large shrimps, and some seasonal ingredients. The portions are generous yet the price is just ¥900 (+¥100 for a large size). There are even more generous portions sets if you pay a little extra too.
Tempura Tsunahachi is a very classical tempura restaurant where they serve some of the most beautiful elaborate sets with many small dishes. It's a bit on the expensive side but if you go for lunch during a weekday, there are some great deals. You can get some beautiful two beautiful sets for less than ¥2,000 and there is also a seasonal one that is about ¥2,000. The restaurant is at about a 3-minute walk from the East Exit of the Shinjuku Station or a 3-minute walk from the Shinjuku Sanchome Station.
Funabashiya is a large restaurant (some 130 seats) of long-standing. It's popularity has endured for more than a century due to its amazing quality tempura that is carefully made with seasonal ingredients. They serve some expensive sets, but they have affordable lunch options too! Try the tendon bowl for ¥1,350. It comes with miso soup too. Another option is the 7 item tempura set at ¥1,500 for which the rice is in a separate bowl, and it comes with other small side dishes as well.
Tenkichiya is definitely one of the best spots to get a satisfying cheap lunch on the west side of Shinjuku. The tempura bowl which includes a deep-fried that has a perfectly creamy runny yolk is just around ¥1,000. There are 7 set meals that are all under ¥1,500.
This place is famous for its skewered tempura that you can order for about ¥150 a piece. If you want a lunch set, they have some nice ones too that range in price from about ¥800 to ¥1,200. Dandanya is located a 5-minute walk from the West Exit of Shinjuku Station.
