Warayaki Sakaba Ryujinmaru is located at a 1-minute walk from Okachimachi station in the Ueno area. The specialty here is "warayaki", which is a cooking technique that consists of using a straw fire to cook bonito.
The brief but strong straw flame gives the fish a distinctive woody fragrance and the cooking itself is really interesting to look at while you're enjoying your meal.
You have to try warayaki-cooked fish!
The warayaki bonito, which is the signature dish of the restaurant, is ¥790. You cannot leave the place without trying it. The fire is so strong that even people walking outside stop at the window of the restaurant to look at it.
The fish is then cut in bite-sized pieces as soon as it is cooked which only takes an instant. The outer part is well-cooked whereas the inside is still raw.
You enjoy warayaki bonito simply salted with some Japanese ginger, leek and garlic. The fresh combination is perfect with the fish.
Bonito is not the only fish you can have warayaki. Try the assortment set for ¥1,890. It includes salmon, octopus, Japanese amberjack, etc. This item is highly recommended if you go in a group.
Delectable chicken and motsunabe also served
If you want to try something other than fish, then the restaurant recommends its juicy spicy chicken (¥890).
It's so flavourful and fragrant with plenty of garlic and Japanese hot spices. The crispy spice toppings with the tender chicken are the perfect combination of textures.
This is a staple at Japanese izakayas. It's a motsunabe, which is a hot pot of innards. The fresh meat is produced domestically. This is a popular item to share in a group too.
All these food go wonderfully well with Japanese sake, and they have a great selection for you to enjoy.
For a healthy delicious dinner in Okachimachi near Ueno, make sure to give Ryujinmaru a try. You'll love the atmosphere as much as the food!
