Maruyama Park

Maruyama Park (円山公園, Maruyama Kōen) is a public park next to Yasaka Shrine in the Higashiyama District.
Completed in 1886, this is the oldest park in Kyoto. During the following years, many features were implemented in the park. In 1893, fountain works using canal water were attached to the Hyotan-Numa pond. In 1914, Ogawa Jihei VII added the finishing touch by completing an authentic circuit style walking garden.

Maruyama is now home to about 680 cherry blossom trees, making it the main hanami spot in Kyoto.
The big star of the park, though, is a massive weeping cherry blossom tree (shidarezakura). The tree is said to be 87 years old. Every spring it explodes with blossoms and was given special lighting at night to enhance its splendor.
