'Kyoto Gatten' is a "Tempura Pub" restaurant in Kyoto that offers the chance to experience a wide variety of traditional Japanese foods and beverages all in one place! Starting this summer, the restaurant is offering a 'Matcha Experience,' included with lunch where guests can make their own matcha!
'Kyoto Gatten' is a Japanese-style gastro pub, serving a variety of delicious, traditional Japanese dishes in one place. Here, you can try fresh sushi with fish bought straight from the market, interesting tempura dishes (including the shop's famous meat tempura), soba, and more!
Starting this summer, the restaurant will also be offering guests a chance to experience Japanese culture by making their own matcha, included with any of the lunch sets!
5-piece masu sushi set, ¥1,980
Kyoto Gatten serves 12 different traditional 'washoku' lunch sets for a very reasonable price (the cheapest is just ¥980). one of the more eye-catching sets is the masu sushi set shown above, which features 5 different "sushi" served in 'masu' a traditional Japanese measuring cup.
'Gatten Gozen' ¥2,980
Another set that is worth mentioning is the 'Gatten Gozen,' shown above. This set allows the eater to enjoy sushi, tempura, and soba, all in one meal. This is a great option if you can't make up your mind!
Make Your Own Matcha
Included with any of the lunch sets is a 'Matcha Experience,' which allows guests to try their hand at making their own matcha. The high-grade tea served at the restaurant is from a local Kyoto teahouse, and showcases the beautiful flavor of truly good matcha. For those who are unfamiliar with making mathca, the restaurant even made a simple video that shows you how to do it! This is definitely a cool idea, and hopefully there will be many customers learning more about Japanese tea culture from this experience.
Niku Tempura (Meat Tempura)
While lunchtime offers some awesome lunch sets and matcha, dinner at Kyoto Gatten is equally special. One of the shop's signature dishes is 'Niku Tempura' (meat tempura), which is something that needs to be experienced. Supremely tender, melt-in-your-mouth Kuroge Wagyu (a type of Japanese beef) is breaded and fried as tempura, creating a light, crispy coating.
Being a pub, there is also an extensive collection of beer, sake, and cocktails to choose from that go wonderfully with the food. You'll want to try many different food items and drinks while you're here for sure!
