Ichiran in Dotonbori

So many things to do in Dotonbori, and eating delicious ramen is one of them. Ichiran is arguably one of the best, and probably the most well-known, ramen chains in the world. They have many joints across Japan, two of which are located in the vibrant Dotonbori district of Osaka! Here are the addresses.
They both serve the same great ramen, but if you have to choose between the two, go to the Honkan because the Bekkan is just so huge and gets so crowded that people sometimes complain that it's like a theme park.

How to order

Ichiran has a unique system for ordering that is quite an experience in itself.

You first choose the ramen you want from a vending machine. The standard bowl is ¥890 and is delicious enough in itself. If you want something more filling, choose a deluxe version for more than ¥1,000 or order some extra toppings a la carte.

Next, you look at the board to see which seat is available.

Once a seat opens up, you head to your booth-like counter seat. You can remove the partitions if you're sitting with a friend next to you.
customize_your_ramen
At your place, they'll be a short questionnaire that you have to fill in to customize the ramen the way you want it. You can choose the level of spiciness, the springiness of your noodles or the amount of garlic for instance.

It takes about 5 minutes for your ramen to be served from behind the counter.

The delicious ramen!

Voilà! Now the delicious tonkotsu-style ramen is yours to enjoy. You'll get two pieces of chashu pork as a topping.
ichiran_soup
Tonkotsu means that the broth is pork based. Ichiran doesn't use artificial flavour enhancers so the rich umami comes from the slow cooking of pork bones.
ichiran_noodles
The noodles are really nice too, cooked perfectly to the consistency you selected.

Ichiran's ramen is not too heavy, so many people finish it to the last drop!

In closing...

There are other locations in Osaka, but these two shops are really well located and very popular with the locals and tourists alike. Add them to your bucket list of things to do in Dotonbori and try them out next time you go.
