Enjoy a traditional Japanese breakfast while gazing at the Tsukiji Honganji Temple!

tsukiji
Cafe Tsumugi, located at just a 1-minute walk from Tsukiji station. You can go there for breakfast, lunch, dinner or tea time, but what I tried today was their breakfast inspired by Japanese Buddhist cuisine.

The interior is peaceful, relaxing, and the large windows provide a spectacular view of the Honganji temple.

You can eat in or have your order for take-out. If the weather is nice, it could be pleasant to have something outside too, but I chose to stay in.

You can only have this kind of breakfast here

breakfast_small_plates
The featured breakfast special is this gorgeous set of 18 delicacies served in small plates (¥1,944). Take note that the set is only available from 8:00 to 11:00 AM.

The items in on the platter include 'ume boshi' (Japanese sour plums), tofu, octopus marinated in 'shio koji' (a bi-product of rice fermentation), duck grilled with 'sansho' (Japanese pepper), fried eggplant, and many more items of traditional Japanese cuisine. If you're not too familiar with the genre, every item will be a discovery!
two_plates
This Japanese style sweet and savoury 'tamagoyaki' omelette and the sweet kombu seaweed next to it are local specialties and come from nearby Tsukiji vendors.

Everything was delicious and if you happen to be still hungry after all that food, you'll be glad to know that the 'okayu' porridge is all-you-can-eat.
green_tea
The set also comes with tea (hot or cold) or herbal tea that you can have refills of for free. Green tea is the perfect beverage to have with this Japanese breakfast.

They have a great selection of premium teas too. If you really liked what you have, you can purchase some to bring back.

In closing...

This cafe is unique. No other place that I know of in Tokyo offers this kind of experience where you can have an elaborate Japanese breakfast while gazing at one of Tokyo's major temples. Give it a try next time you visit the Tsukiji area.
