Sweets Expert Chooses the Top 5 Puddings in Tokyo! (Purin プリン!)

One of Favy's Japanese writers, 'Mr. Kuroneko' is an expert on all things sweet that are served at Tokyo's cafes. Here is a list of the top 5 places to get Japanese pudding (purin) in Toyko (in his very expert opinion). Enjoy!

Feel free to follow favy!

No. 5: Meikyoku Coffee Mugi

名曲・珈琲 麦 (Meikyoku・Coffee Mugi) is an old cafe that was established in 1964. The Hongo-based cafe serves hearty pudding with a classic, Showa-era style.

As is common at old-school cafes, both a 'Pudding' and 'Pudding A La Mode' are offered, but the pudding shown here is the standard 'Jikasei Purin'(homemade pudding). The wonderfully smooth pudding is a bit on the mild side, but is nicely complemented by the semi-bitter caramel sauce and whipped cream. It's a delicious treat, to be sure!

No. 4: Nito

Above is the standard 'Purin' from a cafe called 'Nito.'
The firm and smooth pudding is coated with a healthy portion of bittersweet caramel sauce, which includes the enchanting aroma and flavor of rum. It's definitely a treat geared towards an adult's taste and is very delicious.

'Nito' has the vibe of a retro coffee shop, but was actually opened recently, in 2018. It's a great place to relax and read a book while enjoying a treat or a cup of excellent coffee.

No. 3: Nishi Asakusa Kuronekotei

'Kuronekotei' is another fairly new cafe (opened in 2017) that has a distinctly retro atmosphere. Everything from the decorations to the dishes give off an early-Showa-era vibe that is perfect for eating a retro dessert like pudding.
The shop's signature dish is this 'Kruronekotei Purin,' which is served on a retro silver platter. The pudding has a delicious, deep egg custard flavor and texture which goes perfectly with the syrup topping. The cherry on top is.. well...the cherry on top!

No. 2: Trianon

Trianon is an old sweets cafe located close to Okubo Station, north of Shinjuku. This cafe also has a great, authentic old-school vibe that is quite comfortable. The cafe serves excellent cake, toast, pasta, gratin, and sandwiches, but the pudding is a true standout!
It may look like pudding a la mode, but the pudding shown above is actually just the standard 'Purin!' This outstanding pudding is truly luxurious, and comes with chocolate lace, a wafer, and fruits on the side! This one definitely wins the looks category, but the flavor is also outstanding.

No. 1: Eden

'Eden' is a cafe located right next to Shin Otsuka Station that has been around since 1959. This cafe is about as old-school as it gets, with green leather booth seats and flowered wallpaper. The atmosphere is perfect for pudding!
Eden's 'Jikasei Purin' (homemade pudding) is Mr. Kuroneko's favorite in Tokyo. It's difficult to tell from the picture, but the pudding is quite large and has an incredibily smooth texture and custard flavor. The bittersweet caramel sauce is perfectly balanced to the sweetness of the pudding and is an absolute joy to eat. It's the perfect complement to a cup of coffee, or can be enjoyed on its own. Try it out for yourself!
