'Isezushi' is a Michelin-starred sushi restaurant in Otaru, a small seaside town just west of Sapporo, Hokkaido.
The second-generation chef at Isezushi has many years of formal training and experience under his belt, yet still is always on the hunt for new ideas, even visiting new-fangled conveyor belt sushi restaurants for inspiration. It's this attitude that has allowed him to develop his own style and techniques that make for some truly outstanding sushi.
The ingredients used are the freshest available, and are sourced both locally and from other parts of the country. The chef prepares the sushi neta (toppings) in the most delicious way possible, even when it takes a great deal of time. The tuna shown above is marinated in the chef's special sauce for a day, and the tamagoyaki (egg) takes more than 4 hours of preparation. Eating the sushi here is truly a treat and is worth making the trip over from Sapporo!

Prices at 'Isezushi' are quite reasonable. The simple 12 piece nigiri course is about ¥4,000, which is a great deal! Other nigri courses are also available, but the recommended course to order is the dinner Sushi Kappo course, which is available for ¥8,800 and includes 8 small dishes and 5 to 6 nigiri sushi pieces.

Isezushi is located about 7 minutes away from Otaru Station, which is about an hour and 10 minutes by train from Sapporo. It could be an easy day trip, or make for a lovely overnight stay in Otaru, a smaller town.
