For Delicious Mexican Food in Tokyo, 'La Jolla' Can't be Beaten!

'La Jolla' is a small restaurant located near Shibuya's Hiro-o Station that serves wonderfully delicious Tex-Mex Cuisine just like that found in the southern United States! Considering its size, Tokyo has surprisingly few Mexican restaurants. However, La Jolla is among the very best that the city has to offer and is definitely worth a visit!

Serving Tex-Mex Food in Tokyo for 30 + Years!

Japan has surprisingly few Mexican restaurants. I suppose it makes sense since the two countries are located so far away from each other, but as someone who grew up in the United States, where multiple Mexican restaurants can be found in even a small town, it's strange that it's so difficult to fix a taco craving when living in Tokyo.

Luckily, there are a few good places in the city that are there when you need them! One such place is called 'La Jolla,' located 5 minutes from Hiro-o Station in Shibuya-ku.
La Jolla opened in 1987, back when Mexican food was barely known at all in Japan. The chef who first developed the menu here was an American, and so the food is really not pure Mexican, but Tex-Mex, the kind of Mexican food served in the southern U.S.

That being said, it's completely delicious!
The restaurant grows their own tomatillos and habanero and poblano peppers - ingredients that otherwise would have to be imported into Japan. The freshness of the ingredients shows, and the beautiful fragrance and sweetness of the peppers shine through in all of the sauces that adorn the various dishes.
The most popular items on the menu are definitely the large and satisfying burritos, which come in a delicious sauce and are eaten with a fork and knife. The restaurant also makes their own mole, and any of the dishes featuring it are wonderful.

For those who'd rather just enjoy a drink (Mexican beer and tequilla-based drinks such as margaritas are recommended), there's also a light menu of items such as tacos and ceviche which are a perfect complement to a tasty drink. The restaurant is small, but it's great for bringing your family or hanging out with friends after work.

La Jolla is located about 5 minutes away from Exit 2 of Hiro-o Station. It's located on the second floor of a building, and you can spot it by its sombrero-shaped sign outside.
Next time you're craving some authentic Mexican cooking, go check it out!
I live in west Tokyo and spend most of my time thinking about food or going bouldering.
