5 unagi (eel) restaurants in Ginza with a solid repuation

Delicious foods abound in Ginza, so it can be hard to decide where to eat. For unagi, you won't be disappointed with any of these five amazing restaurants! They're about average in price for unagi but exceptional in quality.

Chikuyotei

Chikuyotei is a very well-known restaurant in all of Tokyo. It serves really good unagi at a fairly reasonable price compared to other restaurants, and that's why it's so popular.

You can get the unagi-don for ¥3,240, taxes included. It consists of unagi, perfectly cooked with Chikuyotei's secret tare sauce, simply place over a bowl of rice. It comes with some pickled vegetables and a light-tasting soup that contains the eel's liver. If you are willing to pay about ¥6,000, you can have an exquisite, elaborate set meal that comes with unagi but also all kinds of traditional small side dishes.

The restaurant has a traditional interior with its tatami rooms, low tables, and simple flower arrangements that change with the seasons as decoration.

Hyotanya 1-Chome

This is another institution in Ginza for Unagi. It's been around since 1946, although it changed its location in 2008 to the current address.

The restaurant is intimate and cozy, with only 7 counter seats and 8 seats at two tables - if possible, you might want to sit at the counter because it's interesting to see the chef grill the unagi. The restaurant is small, very popular, and they do not accept reservations, so if you want to get in you might have to wait in line a bit.

They serve a very resonably-priced unagi-don for lunch, at ¥1,800. Otherwise, you can have different size unagi sets ranging in price from ¥2,600 to ¥3,800. They also offer some 'shio-yaki' (grilled with salt only) from ¥2,800.

It's located very near Ginza Six, so after some shopping there, it's the perfect place to have lunch or dinner.

Hyotan 6-Chome

This is the other location of Hyotan in Ginza, closer to the Higashi-Ginza station than it is to the Ginza station.

It's the same food at the same prices. The restaurant is just a bit bigger, they're open on every Saturday, and here they do accept reservations at this location for some reason.

Hyotan is arguably one of the best unagi restaurants in all of Tokyo for the price so both locations are worth mentioning.

Ore-no Unagi

You might have heard about this 'Ore-no' restaurant chain before because they're getting pretty famous for good reasons. The concept of the chain is to offer a casual dining experience without comprising on quality. They've had a wide-ranging success with many genres of food from 'Ore-no French', to 'Ore-no Bakery', to 'Ore-no Yakitori'. And now, they 'Ore-no Unagi' is also garnering excellent reviews.

What is interesting here is that their menu is more diverse than other unagi restaurants. You can, of course, get the standard uan-ju or una-don a la carte or as part of sets, but they also serve some more original items such as unagi karaage, small unagi grilled on skewerers, or even some shio-yaki unagi served to you on a charcoal brazier.

If you want something really special, you can even have there a kaiseki course from ¥10,000. Everything is of really good quality. All their eels are from Japan.

Binchou

The unagi served here is a bit different because it's done Nagoya style. The sauce used while grilling is a mix of tamari soy sauce and mirin. It's cooked at a higher temperature for a briefer amount of time, so the skin is crispier and the meat is juicier than other places.

You might want to try the Hitsumabushi (¥3,500) here, which is one of the most iconic foods of Nagoya. The cooked eel is cut into small pieces and placed in a round bowl of rice. You eat half of it first and then you can change the taste by pouring the soup in it that is served with it.
