Kagurazaka Hanten: cheap chuka restaurant with a jumbo gyoza challenge


Hanten is one of the best cheap options in Kagurazaka. It has really good Chinese food and people also know it for its jumbo gyoza challenge.

Kagurazaka Hanten

Hanten is a famous Chinese restaurant in the Kagurazaka-Iidabashi area that serves good satisfying 'chuka' (Chinese food in Japanese) for less than ¥1,000.

It's located about a 5-minute walk from Kagurazaka station or a 2-minute walk from Iidabashi station.

It's a totally unpretentious place where you can walk in casually and have a quick lunch or dinner. You'll see plenty of hungry office workers there whenever you go.
Most people order the standards: gyozas (dumplings), stir-fried rice, chuka soba ramen, or mabo tofu. They're all solid choices that shouldn't disappoint.
The mabo tofu has a good balance of spices. It's very savory and not too hot.
The large size ramen bowl is so big that you probably won't be able to finish it.
Almost everyone orders some kind of stir-fried rice, either as part of a set meal or a la carte.
The same is true for their juicy pan-fried gyozas!

Mind-blowing ¥9,600 jumbo gyoza challenge

Aside from the reasonably priced satisfying foods listed above, this incredible jumbo fat gyoza is the other claim to fame of the restaurant.

If you're really in the mood for gyozas, then here's a challenge for you. Hanten can prepare for you this massive ¥9,600 jumbo gyoza that is equivalent to 100 standard small ones. If you eat it all within an hour, you won't have to pay anything, but if you fail to finish it, you'll have to pay the actual cost which is ¥9,600.

The challenge has created quite a lot of buzz in the Japanese foodie Youtuber community.
As you can see, it's actually possible to finish it within 20 minutes! Be aware that this girl is an 'ogui' (competitive eater) so you might struggle a bit more!

Give Hanten a try if you have the chance! If not for this crazy challenge, then just for the nice chuka that's easy on the wallet.
