Introducing Gomaya Kuki's Sweet Potato and Sesame Ice Cream Sundae
This is it. Gomaya Kuki's insanely rich sesame ice cream (supposedly the richest sesame ice cream in the world) combines with roasted sweet potato fries in an absolutely mouthwatering combination. Roasted sweet potatoes are a traditional classic Japanese sweet in the wintertime and they go wonderfully with sesame.
There's actually a classic sweet called 'daigaku imo' (大学芋）that consists of sweet potato fries coated in a sweet sugar glaze and sesame seeds. This sundae combines flavors in a similar way, but is more sesame-centric with the rich ice cream as the focus.
6 Kinds of Sesame Ice Cream
The sweet potato and sesame ice cream sundae can be made with any of Gomaya Kuki's 6 flavors of sesame ice cream, shown above. Any of the flavors go well with the sesame, but we recommend either the Triple Rich Black or the Triple Rich White, as the extra richness balances well with the sweet potato.
Gomaya Kuki has now been open for 2 years, and has become one of Harajuku's top ice cream stores thanks to the incredible quality of the sesame ice cream used. The shop is operated in partnership with Kuki Sangyo, a famous sesame producer, meaning that the quality of the sesame is as good as it gets. In just one serving of ice cream, there are 9,000 sesame seeds!
In case that wasn't enough, the ice cream can be topped with a sprinkling of sesame seeds and drizzled with fresh sesame oil for an extra punch.
Gomaya Kuki is located in a stylish store between Harajuku and Omotesando Stations. It's quite close to the famous Takeshita Street that Harajuku is known for. It's a great place to stop for a rest in the middle of exploring the area.
In additon to ice cream, there are a variety of other interesting items on the menu that are worth trying. The deep fried tempura ice cream balls are definitely worth trying, as is the sesame marble cheesecake and the fluffy pancake topped with sesame ice cream. If you're craving something sweet, this is definintely the place to come in Harajuku.
In 2020, this is the sweet to try in Harajuku! Give it a try next time you're in the area. Gomaya Kuki is located just one minute from Meiji-Jingu-mae Station.
