5 Ueno Izakayas The Locals Love To Go To

Ueno is a great spot for cheap eating and drinking! Here are 5 of the best Japanese-style taverns in that area.

Feel free to follow favy!

Daitoryo 大統領

Daitoryo is an izakaya that is all about cuisine made with tripes. Tripes are commonly known as 'horumon' in Japan, and if you haven't had horumon, you should definitely try them. They are many ways in which horumon are enjoyed, but most commonly, they're done grilled on skewers or simmered in stews until they are very tender and infused with the rich taste of the soup they are cooked in.

Skewers and stews are exactly what you get at Daitoryo. You can trust that with their seven decades of experience, they make some of the best in the area. This is definitely a flagship izakaya of Ueno, loved by the locals, that you won't go wrong with.

Prices are cheap too. Most skewers are about ¥200.

Shitamachi Bar Nagaoka 下町バル ながおか屋

This is a very popular Spanish-style cheap dining bar in the area especially famous for its lamb chops. Have them done either with the izakaya's secret tare sauce or with some Spanish salt. They're ¥440 each.

If you go with some friends, a good option is to order paella to share. Those are ¥1,600 to ¥3,000 depending on the size and kind you order.

Drinks here are pretty average in price with lots of choices at about ¥500.

Yakiton Machan やきとん ま~ちゃん

Here you can enjoy some yummy, cheap yakiton (pork skewers). Just like yakitori (chicken skewers), they come in all kinds of cuts and with either a tare sauce seasoning or lightly salted. Prices vary from ¥130 to ¥210 per skewer.

This is mostly a counter seat izakaya (14 seats) but there a few table seats as well (can seat 6 to 8 people). With some luck, you might be able to sit at a table if you're looking to go in a group.

Yakiton Machan is located near Okachimachi Station.

Ryujinmaru 龍神丸

The specialty here is 'warayaki', which is a cooking technique that consists of using a straw fire to sear fish. The warayaki bonito, which is the signature dish of the restaurant, is ¥790. You cannot leave the place without trying it.

Ryujinmaru is located at a 1-minute walk from Okachimachi station in the Ueno area.

Torie 鳥恵

At this reputable restaurant, you can have some high-end free-range chicken yakitori. If you want to taste some carefully prepared yakitori of outstanding quality and are willing to pay a price in accordance, then this is the place to go. The recommended ¥7,000 yakitori course is made with the chef's selection.

The restaurant is on a small backstreet just to the west Ueno-Okachimachi station. You'll know that you're stepping inside something refined just by seeing the elegant noren curtain at the door outside.
