There are so many yakitori izakayas in Ueno that it might be difficult to decide which one to go to. Go to one of these five and you won't go wrong!

Feel free to follow favy!

Torie 鳥恵

At this reputable restaurant, you can have some high-end free-range chicken yakitori. If you want to taste some carefully prepared yakitori of outstanding quality and are willing to pay a price in accordance, then this is the place to go. The recommended ¥7,000 yakitori course is made with the chef's selection.

The restaurant is on a small backstreet just to the west Ueno-Okachimachi station. You'll know that you're stepping inside something refined just by seeing the elegant noren curtain at the door outside.

Yakitori Ueno Bunraku やきとり 上野文楽

Yakitori Bunraku is an izakaya of long-standing (opened in 1958) located near Ueno Station, and right under the tracks of the Yamanote Line. They have small tables on the street which gives it a cool street market tavern kind of vibe. They use quality ingredients and they know how to grill and season perfectly with all those decades of experience. Orders start at around ¥240 apiece. A cup of sake is just ¥320 and beer is pretty standard in price at ¥480.

Iseroku 伊勢ろく

They specialize in everything done with chicken, including oyakodo, stews, karaage, etc. Their yakitori is also delectable, and quite high-end. It's a stylish traditional restaurant with a large counter from which you can see the yakitori grilling. If you go with company, you might want to sit at one of their horigotatsu (sunken table) in semi-private rooms.

Torimitsukuni 鳥光國

This izakaya is a great spot for some meaty lunch donburi. For about ¥1,000 they serve you original bowls of rice with all kinds of yakitori meats and other ingredients as toppings.

If you go for dinner in a group, they have excellent-value-for-the-price courses from ¥4,000 that even include unlimited orders of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. On the drink side, their sour cocktails made with a generous amount of fruits are a popular choice.

Toriyoshi 鳥良

They have a solid yakitori skewered chicken menu, but the reason people go there is for their addictively delicious Japanese-style chicken wings. Apparently, they're marinated a full month before being fried and served to you. You can choose the level of spiciness you want them.

The izakaya has a nicely done modern Japanese interior, and note that it's very spacious so they can usually take large groups.
