Nakano

Naturally, one of Tokyo's neighbourhoods with the highest concentration of hipsters should have great cafes. Koenji does not disappoint! Here are 7 exceptional places that you go to either for the sweets, relaxing atmosphere, great coffee or delicious light meals.

HATTIFNATT

This is a cute cafe with super tasty and beautiful homemade sweets that doubles as a gallery. Their signature pumpkin Mont-Blanc is really worth the try.

It's a good place to go for a regular lunch meal too. They serve dorias and curries for under ¥1,000. From 18:00 they have a special homemade pizza menu (about ¥1,000 each).

COFFEE AMP.

If you're on a quest to find the best coffee in town made by an independent roaster then this might be the shop to go to. The people at Coffee Amp. are really knowledgable so feel free to ask them for advice. Coffee Amp. is on the south side of Koenji Station, close to Shin-Koenji Station.

The day's drip coffee is ¥600. They also serve some excellent crepes.

Jules Verne is located about an 8-minute walk to the east of Koenji Station (towards Asagaya Station).

Meu Nota

This cafe on the second floor of a building is well-known by the vegan community. Everything is meat-free, fish-free, egg-free, and dairy-free. They serve some colorful and delicious meals inspired by a mix of Japanese and South Indian cuisines that any health-conscious foodie will love.

honohono cafe

This is a dog-friendly cafe where people mostly go for the yummy fluffy pancakes or the curries and other light meals. It has a simple decor with a relaxing vibe, and they occasionally have live music shows in the evening.

Dogberry

Dogberry is a cafe/restaurant/bar/shisha bar that's also dog friendly and has good vegetarian options. It's open from around lunchtime to 3 AM so you can use the place for almost any occasions. It's a really laid back place with a mix of couches, sofa chairs and horigotatsu low tables.

For food, their seasonal parfaits might be what you want to try for a sweet and the taco rice is a good option if you want something savory.

R-za Dokushokan Cafe (reading cafe)

This is a small authentic cafe designed especially for reading. With large windows and plenty of plants, it has the perfect quiet atmosphere for that. Do not go along with a friend for a chat because speaking is actually prohibited to preserve the mood it was intended to have.

All drinks are ¥680. They have a really nice selection of gourmet cafes that they will carefully prepare for you. On the sweets side, their ¥200 brownies are pretty popular.
