Best Shirasu Bowls In Kamakura Area

In Japan, shirasu (whitebait, Young Sardine) is used in many food during the spring season.In Kanagawa prefecture, there is a ban to collect shirasu between January to March. This year, the collection of shirasu started on 3/11, and this is also when restaurants start serving shirasu bowls in the Kamakura area. Japanese Spring Shirasu (Whitebait)

There are several places in Japan where shirasu gets collected, but one main area is the Kamakura/Shonan area in Kanagawa prefecture. The Spring Shirasu that gets collected from mid March has a sweet aftertaste to it, and is eaten mainly around April to May.

In the Kamakura area, many Japanese restaurants serve shirasu bowls during this season, so let's take a look at a few!

1. Shirasu-ya

This restaurant is located right across Koshigoe Fishing Port, so they serve freshly collected shirasu.
Their most popular dish is the Two-colored shirasu bowl. You can enjoy both the raw and boiled shirasu at the same time. This store specializes in serving shirasu during spring season, so if you want some freshly collected shirasu, this restaurant is highly recommended!

2. Kama-Kama

This restaurant serves each bowl in a small hot pot, and adds seasonal toppings. Many of their bowls use shirasu, but this store mixes shirasu with other toppings. The most popular bowl in the store is the Tri-color shirasu bowl, which consists of sea urchin, shirasu and salmon roe.
They have a variety in their menu, as well as seasonal bowls that can only be eaten during the season.
Now, they have spring bowls such as the Shirasu and Sakura Shrimp bowl.

3. Akimoto

The concept of this restaurant is to serve dishes that can only be made in Kamakura. Therefore, the ingredients such as vegetables and shirasu all come from Kamakura. The shirasu bowl uses "Shonan Shirasu" that the chef gets every morning during the spring season from the local fisherman.

They have both raw shirasu bowls and boiled shirasu bowls in the menu, as well as other traditional Japanese dishes using freshly picked Kamakura vegetables.
