For Meat Lovers - Best Gyutan Steak Restaurants in Tokyo

Gyutan (牛タン) is one of the Japanese food made from grilled beef tongue. It is originated in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, but because of its popularity, you can eat in other cities today. Gyutan is so meaty and juicy, yet actually healthier than other meat, amazingly good food!

Negishi (ねぎし)

Negishi is a chain gyutan place having 34 restaurants within Tokyo like in Shinjuku and Sibuya.

It offers high-quality gyutan. They are thick and perfectly grilled on a metal mesh. Negishi focuses not only on gyutan, but also tororo (sticky dish made from Yamato yams) and mugi-meshi (Barley and rice), which are very healthy and nutritious. You should get Shirotan set meal (1620 yen) which you can have gyutan, tororo, and mugi-meshi.

Rikyu (利久)

Rikyu is also a chain gyutan restaurant and they have several shops in Tokyo.

Their gyutan is famous for its thickness. You can enjoy very meaty and chewy gyutan here. Set menu including Gyutan, rice, soup, and a side of vegetables is 1650 yen. They also offer creative menu like gyutan curry!

Date no Gyutan (伊達の牛たん)

This restaurant is from Sendai, where gyutan was born. They have three restaurants in Tokyo, two are very close to Tokyo Station.

Usually gyutan is grilled with salt, but they also cook it with miso, which is worth trying! The meaty flavor of gyutan goes well with miso. You can get a set menu that includes both salt and miso flavored gyutan which is highly recommended (1780 yen)!

Mori no Miyako Tasuke (杜の都 太助)

They have five restaurants in Tokyo. You can enjoy juicy gyutan here.

They serve some creative menu as well as normal grilled gyutan. For example, gyutan stew (1188 yen) is a rich stew with very tender gyutan simmered for a long time. They also offer gyutan simmered in red wine (1058 yen).

Tankiyo (たん清)

If you are looking for gyutan in a Barbecue style, this place can be the best. It is located 5 minutes walk from Akihabara station.

You can cook the thick and juicy gyutan on the mesh in front of you. The grilling sound and smell are truly appetizing! They also have other meat, seafood, and vegetables for your grill option.
