Miyajima (宮島)

Miyajima Island is one of the most scenic spots in Japan, and is known as the island of Gods. There is a shuttle bus to get to Miyajima from Hiroshima Airport(48 minutes) , but you can also take the train (30 minutes) or by ferry (10 minutes).

The temples and shrines in Miyajima combines the two religions of Buddhism and Shintoism. Miyajima is most famous for the great Torii, which was first constructed in 1168. This torii, as well as the entire Itsukushima shrine is a world cultural heritage from 1996. The admission fee for the Itsukushima shrine is 300 yen per person, and is open from 6:30 am to around 6:00pm, but the closing time changes depending of the season, so make sure to check the website beforehand.

Inside Miyajima, there are also aquariums, as well as other shrines and temples such as Daiganji, Toyokuni Shrine and more.
There are so many beautiful things to look at in Miyajima, so a half-day or one day tour is recommended.

Tempura Tsukunejima

Tempura Tsukunejima is located on the street between Itsukushima shrine and the aquarium. You can see the beautiful view of the great Torii while enjoying good tempura and tempura bowls. It is only open until 17:00, so it is best to go to the shrine in the morning, and have a relaxed lunch break with some crispy tempura!

Daruma No Hashou

Daruma No Hasshou is a okonomiyaki restaurant located 5 minutes away from the Itsukushima shrine. You can enjoy local Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki at this restaurant. They also serve fresh Hiroshima oysters on a hot pan, or inside the okonomiyaki. However, as it is open only during dinner time, it is best to tour around Miyajima during the day, and end your tour with some local Hiroshima cuisine at this restaurant.

Yakigaki No Hayashi

Yakigaki No Hayashi is located on the Omotesando Street between Itsukushima shrine and Miyajima Sanbashi. They specialize in serving oysters, either raw, grilled, fried, or even in soba and udon noodles. You can really enjoy fresh Hiroshima oysters at this restaurant, and it will be a dining experience that can only be enjoyed at this restaurant. As it is open from 10:30~17:00, you can either go for a late breakfast, lunch or early dinner. It is located very close to the Itsukushima shrine and the great Torii, so it would be a good place to stop by after touring around the shrine.

Manutanuki

Mametanuki is a local Hiroshima cuisine restaurant where you can enjoy Hiroshima anago, oysters and Hiroshima Taoshita wagyu beef. It is located on the Omotesando street on the way to Itsukushima shrine. Unlike other restaurants that are open only for lunch or dinner, this restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner, so you can enjoy lunch sets during the day, or enjoy other a la carte dishes and Japanese sake during the night time. To enjoy the local cuisine of Miyajima and Hiroshima food, this is a good restaurant to try!

Lastly...

Miyajima is a beautiful place to visit in Japan, and there are also many great restaurants that will make your experience at Miyajima even more memorable.
