Marugame Seimen (丸亀製麺)
Marugame Seimen is a big chain shop specializing in udon, with more than 800 shops all across the country. They also have many outlets at food court. Truly one of the most popular fast food chain in Japan.
Their udon is Sanumi style originated in Kagawa prefecture. Although they are big and cheap chain, they serve uncompromisingly delicious udon to customers. They make udon from 100% Japanese wheat at each store everyday, and cook udon right after you order. The flesh chewy udon tastes amazing!
How to order
They have a variety of udon menu. First, choose your udon and serving style from cold or hot, then size from regular or large. Even if you don’t speak Japanese, you can just point to pictures in the store, or use pictures from the official Marugame website (I"ll attach the link to this article at the last).
"Kake udon" is the most simple udon that you can enjoy the nice texture of the noodle and savory soup. Regular size is only 290 yen!
After you receive your udon, you can add some toppings like Daikon-oroshi (grated Japanese radish) and tororo (granted yam), and also tempura that are freshly fried at each shop. I recommend you to get tempura with your udon since they are very cheap like 100-150 yen and tastes great. My favorite is egg tempura that is crispy outside and soft boiled egg inside...so good!
After you get toppings and tempura, you just go to the cashier and pay. Extra sauce and green onions are available as free toppings, so get as much as you want. Then, find a table and it's time to enjoy your udon! By the way, this beef udon is also good.
Delicious yet cheap Japanese food experience at Marugame Seimen
If you are in Japan on a budget, go try Marugame Seimen. You will like the super cheap and amazing udon for sure!
- I love traveling and eating. My favorites are everything matcha and cheesecakes.
