What Is Okonomiyaki?
Okonomiyaki is a pan fried dish, also known as Japanese pancakes. It consists of batter,cabbage, and a variety of toppings such as meat, seafood, cheese, etc. The word "okonomi" means "to one's liking", so there are many styles in eating this dish. Okonomiyaki originated in Hiroshima and Osaka, but Hiroshima Okonomiyaki always includes noodles and eggs while in Osaka, it does not. Depending on where you eat the Okonomiyaki, the style and ingredients may change, but Okonomiyaki restaurants are located all over Japan.
How To Make Okonomiyaki
Here is a basic recipe on how to make Okonomiyaki. Although some restaurants make the Okonomiyaki for you, many places just bring the batter and you will have to make it yourself! So it may be better to look over these steps before visiting a Okonomiyaki restaurant!
Step 1 : Mix the Batter and Toppings
The waiter will bring you a bowl full of batter and toppings. Mix it all together.
Step 2: Place the Batter and Form a Round Shape
Once the pan is heated up, pour oil on the pan and spread it out. Place the batter and form a round shape.
Step 3: Crack the Egg and Place the Okonomiyaki
Once the Okonomiyaki is nicely grilled, you can place meat on top if you ordered a meat okonomiyaki. Then, you flip over. Crack an egg on the side and place the okonomiyaki on top of the egg. Flip again!
Step 4: Coat Your Okonomiyaki with Sauce, Mayo and Other Toppings
Lastly, you can coat your Okonomiyaki with sauce, mayo and other toppings as a finishing touch. Now you just cut the Okonomiyaki into pieces and serve it onto your plate!
