Mitama Matsuri takes place in Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo in mid-July which used to be Obon period in the old days in Japan where people honour the spirits of the ancestors and the deads. Nowadays obon is during August, so it was different back then, but Mitama Matsuri is still known as a festival where people visit shrines to honour the spirits.
Yasukuni Shrine, around a 5 minute walk from Kudanshita Station.
30,000 lamps that light up at night is breathtaking, and it creates a lively yet elegant and traditional atmosphere. You can also apply to dedicate a lamp to be strung along with others too! For small lamp, it costs about ¥3,000 per lamp, and for larger ones it is about ¥12,000.
What to do at Mitama Matsuri?
You can watch their event, including traditional art such as Aomori nebuta, as well as their popular "Mikoshi-furi" (photo above), where they swing a float up and down. They also have bon-odori where people dance along with traditional Japanese summer music. They also hold a concert by Tsunoda☆Hiro, a famous musician!
They used to have more than 200 of yatai (food stalls) but since 2015 they stopped providing stalls. You are not allowed to bring in alcohol there too, so just keep that in mind when you are visiting!
